The Goblin Grimoire

the trophy

Picture
I enjoy Sarah's smug, triumphant, yet haughty expression in this piece, as well as the possessive way in which she touches her fingers to the fabric of Jareth's disguise. I imagine Jareth trying to keep his cool outwardly--and succeeding because, after all, he IS the Goblin King--but inside he would be smoldering with fury! (Un)Fortunately, Sarah has said the words and there is no way he can get back at her now... ...or is there?

Picture
The cloth flowing with Jareth's fall into... what? Pain? Loneliness? Despair? Love? Passion? Delight? Obsession? I could go on with the questions. The bloodlessness of the arrows piercing his body and his expression, the clutching, helpless position of his hand... they give nothing away except to wild speculation.

Jareth does not bother to hide the fact that Sarah holds sway over his heart... But she herself gazes obliviously into the distance, holding her book in an almost absent-minded manner. The way the Goblin King's 'heart-strings' tangle and twine about Sarah's fingers make me wonder... who is the one being captured, manipulated and tried here, really? The book does not bear any resemblance to the story beloved of Sarah (and the rest of us), and yet the bookmark leads to the Goblin King himself, who makes no show of trying to resist the influence of the woman who bested him.

forgiveness

Picture
Calm, sorrowful, yet with an air of redemption, this is the kind of work whose true meaning is perhaps best left unexplained. Several short stories have already been written for it... what tale can you find to accompany those silent expressions, that snowbound landscape, the Goblin King's uncharacteristically bowed-over figure?
